Police Pursuit Crash in Kansas City, KS on K7 Northbound Near Canaan Dr

Kansas City, KS (February 11, 2026) – A serious car accident in Kansas City unfolded following a police pursuit on Tuesday, February 10. The crash occurred just before 3:00 p.m. on K7 Northbound, near milepost 167.7, slightly north of Canaan Drive in Wyandotte County.

According to investigators with the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2017 Ford Mustang driven by 28-year-old Larry Eugene Gatlin of Lawrence, Kansas, was fleeing law enforcement when the incident began. Gatlin reportedly ran a red light at K7 and Canaan Dr before slamming into three separate vehicles in a chaotic chain of collisions.

After running the red light, Gatlin’s Mustang first collided with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. The impact caused his vehicle to veer left and hit a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. Continuing northbound in the wrong direction, using the southbound lanes, Gatlin then struck a fourth vehicle, a 2007 GMC Sierra.

The driver of the Malibu, 37-year-old Sadae Monique Banzet of Bonner Springs, Kansas, sustained injuries and was transported to KU Medical for treatment. The Mountaineer was driven by Angela M. Vlasic, 57, of Shawnee, Kansas, who complained of pain and was also taken for evaluation. A 77-year-old passenger in the same vehicle, Kathy Zeleznak of Basehor, Kansas, also reported pain-related injuries.

Shawn Patrick O’Brien, 45, of Kansas City, Missouri, was behind the wheel of the GMC Sierra and did not report any injuries. The crash resulted in significant damage to all vehicles involved, and at least three were towed from the scene. Gatlin, the driver pursued by police, was reportedly uninjured and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. No insurance was listed for his vehicle. The case is being handled by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Car Accident in Kansas City on K7 Leaves Several InjuredIn Kansas, car accidents are an unfortunate reality on highways and city streets alike. With thousands of crashes reported each year, many result in injury or worse. From high-speed collisions to distracted driving incidents, the state sees a wide range of motor vehicle crashes that leave victims and families searching for answers.

Victims of car crashes in Kansas may be entitled to recover for their losses, and understanding your legal rights is an important step toward healing. Common issues such as spinal cord injuries and dealing with insurance tactics often come up in these situations.

Victims often feel overwhelmed following a collision like the one on February 10. Here are some common injuries seen in Kansas crashes and how they can impact lives:

  • Whiplash Injuries: These neck injuries are common in rear-end or multi-vehicle collisions. Whiplash can lead to long-term discomfort, headaches, and limited mobility that may require physical therapy or ongoing medical care.
  • Fractures and Broken Bones: The impact from even a moderate car accident in Kansas City can result in fractured ribs, arms, or legs. Recovery often involves surgery, casts, and months of rehabilitation, affecting work and family life.
  • Concussions and Head Injuries: Even with seatbelts and airbags, brain trauma can occur. Symptoms may include memory loss, confusion, or migraines, and some head injuries can have lasting neurological effects.
  • Internal Injuries: Injuries to internal organs from a car accident in Kansas City are harder to detect at the scene and may not show symptoms immediately. This makes emergency evaluation and follow-up care essential.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Sprains, strains, and bruises may seem minor but can limit daily activity. These injuries are sometimes minimized by insurance companies, making documentation important when seeking compensation.
  • Emotional Trauma: PTSD, anxiety, and depression can follow a traumatic crash. Mental health support should be considered part of any recovery plan, especially after a police chase incident.
