Topeka, KS (June 14, 2026) – A Topeka car accident on Interstate 470 left one woman injured on Friday afternoon in Shawnee County. The collision occurred on June 12, 2026, at approximately 5:14 p.m. along I-470 eastbound, about 0.5 miles west of SW Burlingame Rd.
According to the crash report, a 2013 Chevy Captiva driven by Susan E. Johnson, 70, of Topeka, and occupied by Sierra A. Johnson, 21, of Topeka, was traveling eastbound on I-470. A 2013 Honda Civic driven by Susan M. Athey-Sheets, 55, of Topeka, with passenger Clifford W. Sheets, 57, of Topeka, was also traveling eastbound ahead of the Chevy.
Investigators reported that traffic ahead caused the Honda Civic to slow down. The Chevy Captiva then struck the rear of the Honda. Emergency crews responded to the scene and evaluated those involved in the collision.
Authorities stated that Susan M. Athey-Sheets suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment. The remaining occupants were reported to have no apparent injuries. All occupants involved in the collision were reportedly wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash. The accident remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
