Independence, MO (May 17, 2026) – An Independence car accident early Saturday morning left two drivers hospitalized, including one with life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred just after 12:35 a.m. on May 16 near the intersection of 23rd Street and Woodland Street.
Officers with the Independence Police Department responded to the scene of the accident and began investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision. Authorities reported that a 2011 Mitsubishi sedan was traveling eastbound on 23rd Street when it crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a 2014 Jeep Wrangler head-on.
Emergency crews worked to extricate both drivers from their vehicles following the car accident due to the severity of the damage. After being freed from the wreckage, both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police stated that the driver of the Mitsubishi sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the wreck. The driver of the Jeep suffered serious injuries. No additional details about the identities of those involved have been released at this time.
