Wichita, KS – Three-Vehicle Crash at K96 & 151St St Sends Two to Hospital

Wichita, KS (August 5, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a serious crash at the intersection of K96 Highway and 151st Street in Sedgwick County on Sunday afternoon, August 3. The accident left at least two people seriously hurt and caused significant disruption to westbound traffic in the area.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 1:25 p.m. when a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by 89-year-old James Commerford of Wichita, was traveling southbound on 151st Street. As he approached the stop sign at the intersection, Commerford failed to yield and entered the path of westbound traffic on K96.

His vehicle collided with a 2024 Ford F-350, driven by 76-year-old Keith Van Doren of Saint John. The impact pushed the Ford into a 2020 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle operated by 50-year-old Jenny Oliver of Lakin. The chain reaction crash resulted in two victims being taken to St. Francis Hospital with suspected serious injuries.

Commerford, the driver of the Mercury, and Oliver, the motorcycle rider, were both hospitalized for further treatment. Oliver was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Keith Van Doren sustained suspected minor injuries, while his passenger, 62-year-old Darla Van Doren, was not hurt.

The intersection remained closed for some time as Happy Hooker Towing cleared the scene and investigators assessed the crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to look into what caused Commerford to run the stop sign.

We hope those injured in this accident recover rapidly.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Kansas

Wichita, KS – Three-Vehicle Crash at K96 & 151St St Sends Two to HospitalMulti-vehicle collisions in Kansas are more common than many might think, especially at intersections where traffic from different directions converges. In 2024, over 1,200 intersection-related crashes involving multiple vehicles were recorded statewide, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities.

There are many factors that contribute to these kinds of crashes. Below are some key points that shed light on the risks and results of multi-vehicle accidents:

  • Failure to Yield: One of the top causes of multi-vehicle collisions is a driver’s failure to yield. Whether ignoring stop signs or misjudging oncoming traffic, these decisions can result in major crashes involving multiple parties.
  • Increased Injury Potential: When more than two vehicles are involved, the force of impact can be spread in several directions, leading to more complex injuries. Passengers may also be exposed to secondary collisions.
  • Emergency Response Challenges: Multiple vehicles mean more victims and more damage to assess. This often slows down emergency response and increases the risk of complications for injured parties.
  • Insurance and Liability Disputes: With several drivers involved, determining fault becomes harder. This can lead to long insurance battles, especially when injuries or high vehicle values are involved.
  • Chain Reactions: In cases like this one, the initial collision triggers a domino effect. Motorcycles, due to their size and exposure, are especially vulnerable in these scenarios.
