Motorcycle Accidents in Kansas

Marion, KS - Head-On Crash Injures Two on K15 SouthboundMotorcycle accidents in Kansas continue to be a concern on highways and local roadways. In 2022, Kansas recorded nearly 900 motorcycle crashes, with many resulting in serious injuries or worse. Riders face heightened risks due to lower visibility and reduced protection compared to enclosed vehicles.

Understanding what to expect after an accident like this can make a difference. Below are a few key details motorcyclists should keep in mind:

  • Protective Gear: Wearing helmets, jackets, gloves, and boots reduces injury severity. Though Kansas doesn’t require helmets for riders over 18, using one can significantly lower the risk of traumatic brain injuries.
  • Visibility Challenges: Motorcycles are often harder for other drivers to see. Many accidents occur simply because a driver didn’t notice a rider approaching, especially at intersections or during lane changes.
  • Motorcycle vs. Vehicle Collisions: When motorcycles collide with cars, the motorcyclist is more likely to be seriously injured. In multi-vehicle accidents, nearly 80% of injuries are sustained by the rider.
  • Common Injuries: Motorcycle crashes can lead to broken bones, internal bleeding, spinal cord injuries, and road rash. Recovery time is often longer, requiring therapy and ongoing medical support.
