Phillips, KS – Two Injured in Crash at US183 & US36 Jct

Phillips, KS (August 1, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash near the junction of US 183 and US 36 led to injuries for two people on July 31. The collision occurred around 11:50 a.m., approximately 5.5 miles north of K9 on U183.

Reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol state that a 2011 Honda passenger car was heading westbound on U36 when the driver attempted a left turn to go south onto U183. During the turn, the vehicle failed to clear the eastbound lane and collided with an oncoming 2023 Chevrolet SUV that was traveling east in the right-hand lane.

The impact occurred on the passenger side of the Chevrolet. Both vehicles came to rest partially in the northbound lane of U183 and the eastbound lane of U36, causing temporary traffic delays in the area.

The driver of the Honda, 72-year-old Patricia A. Stear from Lincoln, Nebraska, and her 30-year-old passenger, Sarah Fuenning, were both transported to Phillips County Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly detailed. The two occupants of the Chevrolet, identified as Matthew W. Haack and Hannah M. Haack, both of Smith Center, Kansas, were reportedly uninjured in the crash.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Phillips, KS - Two Injured in Crash at U183 & U36 JunctionEach year, thousands of car accidents occur across Kansas, leading to injuries and significant property damage. In 2022, over 13,000 people were hurt in crashes statewide, with many incidents happening at intersections and highway junctions, like the one reported in Phillips County.

Here are a few important considerations for anyone involved in a car accident in Kansas:

  • Intersection Hazards: Left-hand turns across traffic pose one of the greatest risks at intersections. Misjudging oncoming traffic speed or distance can lead to serious T-bone collisions.
  • Right-of-Way Confusion: Some accidents stem from drivers misunderstanding who has the right of way. This is especially common in areas where highways intersect or merge with state routes.
  • Passenger Injuries: Even when the driver walks away uninjured, passengers can suffer head trauma, fractures, or internal injuries due to the impact angle. Passengers should always be evaluated by medical professionals after a crash.
  • Vehicle Positioning Post-Crash: The final resting place of a vehicle after a crash can block additional traffic and create further hazards, especially on busy highways or during peak travel hours.
