Geary Co., KS – Crash on K177 Near I-70 Injures Manhattan Woman

Geary County, KS (July 19, 2025) – A Thursday afternoon crash involving two vehicles along Kansas Highway 177 resulted in injuries and hospital transport for one driver. The collision happened at approximately 3:35 p.m. on July 18 near milepost 196.5, just north of Interstate 70.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2024 Ram 2500, driven by 19-year-old Nicholas K. Newland of Kamuela, Hawaii, exited I-70 in an attempt to assist with another nearby crash. As he crossed K177, the Ram was struck by a 2019 Cadillac XT4 traveling northbound for reasons still being investigated.

The driver of the Cadillac, 33-year-old Ashley N. Taitano of Manhattan, Kansas, was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital for treatment of her injuries. The extent of those injuries has not been released. Newland was not taken to a hospital, and no other passengers were reported in either vehicle.

The scene remained active for some time as emergency crews cleared the vehicles and began investigating the crash. Officials are still determining all contributing factors in the collision.

We hope those injured in this accident recover rapidly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Geary County, KS - Crash on K177 Near I70 Injures Manhattan WomanMotor vehicle accidents across Kansas continue to occur at a high rate, with thousands of crashes resulting in injury each year. Kansas highways, especially near interchanges such as I-70, are common sites for serious collisions due to increased speeds, merging traffic, and driver misjudgments.

Accidents like this often lead to serious outcomes. Here’s a look at some of the most common types of crash injuries drivers and passengers face:

  • Neck and Back Injuries: Even low-speed collisions can cause long-term strain to muscles, ligaments, and discs. These types of injuries often require imaging tests and ongoing treatment like chiropractic care or physical therapy. In high-impact collisions, spinal trauma may require surgical intervention.
  • Head Injuries and Concussions: Brain trauma can happen even if the head doesn’t directly strike something. A sudden jolt in a collision can cause concussions or more serious brain injuries. Symptoms like confusion or dizziness might not show up immediately, making prompt medical evaluation important.
  • Fractures and Broken Bones: Drivers involved in side-impact or front-end collisions frequently suffer broken ribs, arms, legs, or collarbones. These injuries are painful, may require surgery, and can lead to long recoveries that affect work and daily life.
  • Internal Organ Damage: Seat belt injuries or blunt force trauma during a crash can cause damage to organs like the liver, spleen, or lungs. These injuries are not always visible and often require emergency care to detect and treat.
